Exploring taboos to unlock care
BIOGRAPHY
Lekshmy is a care activist-designer with 25 years of experience in health and care. With an MEng from Cambridge University and MA from the Royal College of Art, she spent a decade at Philips Design, working in London, New York, and Eindhoven. As Innovation Director for the global healthcare team, she led programs that transformed insights into new value propositions for Philips Healthcare, driving their Care Cycle strategy and Ambient Experience business.
In 2008, Lekshmy co-founded fuelfor, a design consultancy specialising in healthcare innovation. Collaborating with international health and care organisations, she and her team applied design thinking to develop award-winning products and services. Notable projects include: reimagining end-of-life care with the Lien Foundation to enable the creation of three new hospices, and embedding caregiver support into the Singapore government´s 3rd Enabling Masterplan.
In 2017 Lekshmy co-founded The Care Lab—an activist platform using Care-Centered Design Practices to drive change in health, social care, and education. Collaborative partnerships to co-create new integrated models of care include NHS England and the Catalan Health System. In 2024 her practice initiated the first cultural festival in Barcelona addressing taboos surrounding end-of-life.
Lekshmy´s expertise lies in her ability to communicate credibly across disciplines: encouraging people to challenge conventional thinking, bringing the voices of patients, their families and care teams into transformation processes in inspiring ways, to co-create solutions with measurable and meaningful impact.
Recognition includes: IDSA Gold (2005), TEDx talk on Caregiving (2016), Singapore President’s Design Award (2018), HSJ Partnership Award UK (2025)
